Training Courses and Workshop Seminars

Support Parent Training Course
Parent to Parent New Zealand offer training to parents who have children with disabilities, health impairments and special needs, who are interested in supporting others through the Parent to Parent network.

The Support Parent Training Course is an eighteen-hour programme. It covers communication skill, looks at grief issues, and gives participants an understanding of resources within the disability sector. It provides the opportunity for personal awareness, where parents can consider their ability to support others in similar circumstances. At the conclusion of the training, parents are able to apply for accreditation as Support Parents. Volunteer Support Parents provide support to the families contacting Parent to Parent.

Support Parent Training - Dates for 2008

Thank you to all those who have attended a course this year. Courses for 2009 are being planned so please continue to record your interest for this course.

Regional offices will also be providing existing Support Parents the all important opportunity to refresher their skills and meet with other Support Parents in the area. Contact your Regional Group for more details or to register your interest.

Advocacy Training Course
Parent to Parent New Zealand is offering additional free training to our Support Parents who are interested in providing even more support to others through the Parent to Parent network.

The Parent to Parent Advocacy Training Course is a twelve hour course. It covers

  • Assumptions – and the danger of making them
  • Questioning skills
  • Active listening
  • Planning and research

Learning the skills of advocacy will help improve your own self advocacy skills as well as provide much needed support to other families. You would be matched with a requester due to support needs rather than disability.
There are four main types of support we are looking for our Advocates to offer:

1. Preparation support

Helping someone prepare for a meeting, going through the types of questions they may get asked, so they can practice their responses.

2. Meeting attendance

They may just need a friendly face in a room of professionals or want you to help them say NO

3. Information gathering

They may be new to all this, don’t know where to look for help and you can provide some useful advice.

4. Issue raising

You may be asked to help raise peoples’ awareness of the impact of having a child with special needs.
