Parent Support Programme

This programme is composed of three courses, which can be completed in any order. Pick and choose courses of interest. Parents who, presently, do not feel ready to support others but would like to learn more, are welcome on these courses. Existing Support Parents are encouraged to attend courses to help refresh their skills. Accreditation as a Support Parent can be applied for on completion of the Personal and Communication Skills Courses.

1. Personal Support Course – (One day module)

  • Learn new ideas on how to manage stress
  • Understand grief and how it is portrayed
  • Identify your support network and how to grow it
  • Find ways to build yours and your family’s resilience

2. Communication Course – (Two day module)

  • Develops your communication skills to help you in your own life
  • Enhance your listening skills so you can provide phone support to others

3. Navigating the System –(Half-day module)

  • You don’t know what you don’t know. This course looks at all the resources available within the disability sector and gives you the opportunity to ask questions of people who work in it.

Advocacy Training Course

Having reviewed feedback from last years courses the decision has been made to open this course to any parent or family/whanau member interested in learning more about advocacy skills (see quotes below).

  • “This training will enhance your own self advocacy skills and increase your awareness of when you require advocacy support yourself.”

The Parent to Parent Advocacy Support Training Course is a 12 hour course delivered over two days with the following objectives:

  • Identify the different types and level of advocacy
  • Be able to advocate for others in range of differing situations, depending on own experience
  • Be able to produce an advocacy plan

Currently, advocacy courses are being offered at the locations below. Participants are encouraged to attend the most convenient for them. We actively encourage all Support Parents to attend, either for your own personal development or to provide further support to others.

Christchurch

We invite all parents and family/whanau members interested in learning more about advocacy skills to attend this training. The 12 hour course covers assumptions (and the dangers of making them), questioning skills, active listening, planning and researching. This training is free to parents and family/whanau members.

We are now able to offer limited fee paying places to those who would otherwise not meet our criteria. The course fee is $360.

2nd Generation Workshops
Building on the huge success of the ‘Seeking a Good Life” workshops for parents, a similar programme is being offered for siblings, who often assume responsibility for the support and guidance of their disabled brother or sister, as their parents’ age.

This weekend will focus on the unique perspective of siblings, the distinctive dynamics of the relationship they have with their disabled brother or sister, and will provide practical advice and information about how to manage the role of advocate.

Weekend workshops will be held in Christchurch and is on offer to any adult siblings who is interested in being an important part of the support and guidance of their disabled brother or sister.

Crafting a Future Workshops 2010

You are invited to an inspiring weekend for families with a disabled family member who are seeking strategies for a better life. This two day workshop will discuss themes such as:

Establishing a Vision of a good life for your family member
Building a larger network of enduring relationships to uncover potential and ensure community involvement.

Wills, Trusts, Estates, Benefits
If you have ever wondered who will ensure your family member’s interests are protected, their contributions recognised and their needs and choices honoured, especially when you are no longer here; then this course is for you.
